Who is J.J. Spaun?

JJ Spaun turned professional in 2012 and joined the PGA Tour for the first time in 2017. His crowning moment so far was winning the Valero Texas Open in 2022.

Despite beginning the final round with a double bogey, Spaun went on to beat Matt Kuchar and Matt Jones by two shots on his 147th career start on the tour. He became the first player to start a final round in such a way and win since Tiger Woods at the 2008 US Open.

Spaun won the Web.com Tour, now called the Korn Ferry Tour, for the first time in 2016 at the News Sentinel Open. In the same season, he lost in a playoff to Ollie Schneiderjans – a playoff that also included Collin Morikawa who was still an amateur.

Spaun has earned well over $14 million on the PGA Tour and he has come close to winning more events with a few runner-up finishes on his record as well. In dramatic circumstances at the 2025 Players Championship, Spaun forced a playoff with Rory McIlroy which had to be played on the Monday after the tournament after a long weather delay.

In 2018, Spaun was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after a period of feeling unwell. He underwent treatment but it didn’t work and he later learned in 2021 that he had been misdiagnosed. He actually had type 1 diabetes.

Spaun’s mother was an avid golfer, so it is no surprise that he was given his first set of clubs at three years of age. He supposedly didn’t receive formal lessons while growing up.
