WEATHER ALERT: SNOW EXPECTED SUNDAY FOLLOWED BY AN ARCTIC BLAST

Updated Saturday 8:30 am: Meteorologist Amy Aaronson

Our area is on WEATHER ALERT for Winter Storm Conditions Sunday & Dangerously Cold Temperatures Tuesday & Wednesday as a major blast of Arctic air arrives.

Winter Storm Warnings are posted for Carroll, Baltimore, and parts of Hartford counties for Sunday ahead of the storm system that will bring several inches of accumulating snow to the region.

There will be two disturbances over the weekend that will bring a chance for showers followed by a chance for snow.

A few rain showers are likely Saturday as temperatures will likely be above freezing reaching the 40s by the afternoon. Rain totals will not be much but another disturbance has a good change of bringing some accumulating snow across Maryland on Sunday starting late morning through Sunday night.

Confidence is not particularly high on exact snow totals yet. But, about 1″ to around 3″ is expected with this system along and southeast of the I-95 corridor with 3″ to 5″ possible north and west in Baltimore, Carroll, & Frederick Counties. Less snow is expected in the Eastern Shore counties.

Some uncertainty remains to that forecast as a very slight shift in storm track could bring the higher totals closer to I-95 or even push them further back to the northwest. Check back here for updates on predicted snow totals as those potential scenarios become more apparent.

Snow will end by Sunday night and Monday begins with the arrival of a major Arctic blast bringing dangerously cold temperatures to the region.

Highs will drop from the 40s on Saturday, down to the teens on Tuesday & Wednesday with low temperatures reaching the single digits.

This will be the coldest air of the season to impact the area and it will also affect 3/4 of the lower 48 states with temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees below average.

Dangerously cold wind chill values will be down in the negatives for both Tuesday & Wednesday. Exposure to the extreme cold can lead to hypothermia and frost bite in only 30 minutes. It is important to take precautions and cover all exposed areas with multiple loose fitting layers of clothing. Bring animals indoors and protect exposed water pipes.

A slow return to above freezing temperatures will begin late next week.
