A 16-year-old student at was hospitalized with serious injuries on April 23 following a stabbing that occurred during a fight at West Potomac High School in Alexandria, Virginia, according to school and police officials.

Officials said that the altercation took place just before 9:45 a.m. local time and that a school resource officer rushed to the aid of the wounded student.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said that a third student was being interviewed by investigators but said, “at the moment, we don’t anticipate any criminal charges on this third person.” Davis also said that the victim was in “stable condition.”

None of the students involved were named at the press conference.

NBC News Washington reported that video and images of the fight and its aftermath were circulating among students at the school.

Parents were frustrated about a lack of communication from the district about the incident and confronted Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid during the press conference.

“Why can’t I check my daughter out? That’s all I care about,” a man, identified by NBC Washington as Bill Beal, yelled at Reid during the press conference.

Reid responded that the building was being secured and that staff was ensuring that students were able to access their lunch period.

“I don’t care about lunch right now!” Beal responded. “That’s not an acceptable answer.”

This is a developing story.
