Star man: Lucas Bergvall shone in midfield for Tottenham (Ben Whitley/PA Wire)
Tottenham set up a Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt next month with a 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar in their last-16 decider in north London.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Wilson Odobert’s first goal for the club levelled the tie on aggregate, the winger firing into the top corner after excellent work from Heung-min Son and Dominic Solanke.
James Maddison made it 2-0 shortly after the interval, finishing smartly into the corner after a one-two with Son but Peer Koopmeiners squared the tie with a fierce strike after a defensive mix up.
Odobert capped a brilliant team move with his second goal of the night to restore Spurs’ advantage and keep their season alive.
Here’s how we rated the Spurs players…
Guglielmo Vicario 7
Made a hash of Cruyff turn at the start of the second half which nearly proved costly. Saved well from Troy Parrott to keep Spurs ahead in the tie.
Pedro Porro 7
Won possession in the build up to the second goal and got forward well. Looked shaky defensively, though.
Cristian Romero 8
Much more aggressive and composed after his rusty return against Bournemouth at the weekend. Put in some big tackles and his passing was impressive.
Micky van de Ven 8
What a difference the Dutchman makes. Snuffed out a series of AZ half-chances in a hugely encouraging display on his first start since December 8. The visitors scored minutes after he came off.
Djed Spence 8
Played a leading part in the brilliant team move for the third goal in another impressive display. Combative out of possession but composed on the ball.
His mistake led to AZ’s goal but for the most part he was outstanding at the base of midfield, driving forward with the ball and snapping into a succession of important tackles. Looks much the best bet for the ‘single pivot’ currently available to Postecoglou.
Pape Matar Sarr 7
Used the ball well and got up and down the pitch impressively.
James Maddison 8
Showed great composure and technique to nudge Spurs ahead on aggregate with a cool finish, and started the team move for the winner with a lovely drop of the shoulder.

Wilson Odobert 9
Announced himself with two well-taken goals to win the tie. Lively all night and unfortunate to inadvertently knock the ball into Koopmeiners for the AZ goal.
Heung-min Son 9
Played a major part in all three goals in a decisive performance in the final third.
Dominic Solanke 8
Twice set up Odobert with superb pieces of centre-forward play. The first was unselfish, the second was brilliant.
Subs
Archie Gray (van de Ven 60’) 6
Stretched by AZ’s danger-man Ernest Poku but put in another composed display as the game became stretched.
Yves Bissouma (Maddison 78’) 7
Made an important block to repel Mess de Wit’s effort late in the game.
Brennan Johnson (Odobert 78’) 6
Helped out Porro as AZ pushed for a late leveller but had few chances in the final third.
Ben Davies (Bergvall 84′) 6
Played his part in a late rearguard, as Spurs held on.
