President Donald Trump has declared today “Liberation Day” in the U.S., vowing to follow through on a long-promised plan to shake up the economy.
Trump plans to unveil a plan on global tariffs today in what is being billed by the White House as a “Make America Wealthy Again” event — a long-awaited announcement that is forecasted to redraw new economic agreements among US trade partners.
Trump was still weighing options late Tuesday ahead of today’s announcement, with CNN reporting the president spent most of the day huddled with top trade advisors and on the phone with “many friends and allies calling him up until the eleventh hour.”
Trump has in recent days set new tariffs in motion, with 25% on imported steel and aluminum and 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada. Trump also announced a 25% tariff on all imported automobile and automobile parts, which is set to begin on Thursday, April 3.
What time is Trump announcing tariffs today?
Trump is scheduled to announce at least some of his tariff plans today at 4 p.m. in the Rose Garden at the White House. It’ll be the first time Trump will use the space to host an event during his second term. CNN reported it will include “pomp and circumstance the president expects to accompany an announcement of this magnitude,” citing several White House officials.
