Spurs coach Gregg Popovich back home after medical emergency at restaurant: Source

Gregg Popovich, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who helped guide the San Antonio Spurs to five NBA championships, is back home and doing fine after he was taken by ambulance to a hospital due to a medical emergency on Tuesday night, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.

TMZ was first to report the news.

The coach was dining at a San Antonio steakhouse when he fainted, the reports said. Popovich was then taken to the hospital with a “non-life-threatening injury or illness.”

Popovich, 76, had already taken a step back from coaching the Spurs after suffering a stroke in November. In February, he announced he would not be returning to the sidelines this season, and assistant Mitch Johnson has served as interim head coach.

Popovich was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. In addition to his five NBA titles, he is a three-time NBA Coach of the Year. He was also the head coach of the 2020 U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal in Tokyo.

He has compiled a 1,422-869 record (.621) in 29 seasons, but the Spurs have not made the playoffs since 2019.
