Snow, icy mix with 2 approaching storm systems to impact travel in Massachusetts this week
Updated: 6:13 AM EST Feb 11, 2025
THURSDAY MORNING. I KNOW IT’S ONLY TUESDAY MORNING, BUT I’M TALKING WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING BECAUSE THAT’S WHEN THINGS ARE GOING TO GET A LITTLE UNSETTLED AROUND HERE. WE’VE GOT SNOW COMING IN BETWEEN 10:00 AND MIDNIGHT ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT, AND THERE WILL BE A BURST OF SNOW IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. BUT FOR YOUR THURSDAY MORNING COMMUTE, IT DOES LOOK LIKE WE’RE GOING TO HAVE AN ICY MIX. AND THAT FREEZING DRIZZLE COULD LINGER THROUGH THE LATE MORNING NORTH AND WEST, ESPECIALLY OF 128. SO JUST A LITTLE HEADS UP THAT IT’S GOING TO BE MESSY BY THURSDAY MORNING. AND THEN MAYBE MESSY AGAIN THIS WEEKEND AS WE’VE GOT ANOTHER STORM. SO THE PATTERN IS VERY ACTIVE NOW THOUGH. IT’S COLD. IT’S DRY. SINGLE DIGITS. TEENS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW, ALTHOUGH IT’S SITTING AT 20 DEGREES IN BOSTON, WE’RE GOING TO JUMP UP TO 26 BY 10 A.M., KNOCKING ON THE DOOR OF THE FREEZING MARK AT NOONTIME. FILTERED SUNSHINE FOR A WHILE TODAY, AND THEN THE CLOUDS THICKEN LATE IN THE DAY. NOTICE THE TEMPERATURES SNEAK UP TO THE LOW TO MID 30S IN MOST AREAS, SO NOT A BAD DAY TODAY. WE’VE GOT THOSE HIGH CLOUDS JUST STARTING TO COME INTO CONNECTICUT RIGHT NOW, TRYING TO STREAM ON IN. THESE ARE COMING OFF OUR NEXT STORM SYSTEM, WHICH IS ACTUALLY BEING BLOCKED A LITTLE BIT BY HIGH PRESSURE. SO IT’S GOING TO BE FORCED FAR TO THE SOUTH. SO THAT SNOW SHIELD LOOKS LIKE IT’S PRIMARILY GOING TO STAY TO OUR SOUTH WITH THIS ONE. HERE ARE YOUR CLOUDS THICKENING UP SOUTH OF THE PIKE MID TO LATE AFTERNOON. AND THEN IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. THIS IS ABOUT 2:00 IN THE MORNING. YOU CAN SEE JUST A LITTLE NUDGE OF THAT SNOW SNEAKING UP TOWARD THE SOUTH COAST, THE CAPE AND THE ISLANDS FOR A FEW HOURS. AND THEN IT’S GONE BY SUNRISE. SO THIS IS NOT LOOKING LIKE A BIG DEAL. THERE IS THE POTENTIAL OF A COATING TO MAYBE UP TO AN INCH. I THINK THE BEST CHANCE OF SEEING AN INCH IS GOING TO BE ON THE VINEYARD IN NANTUCKET. BUT THIS IS ALL AGAIN GONE BY MORNING. SO JUST A HEADS UP. IF YOU LIVE DOWN THIS WAY, TEMPERATURES HERE STAY IN THE 20S OVERNIGHT. OTHERWISE WE’RE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS. AND TOMORROW DURING THE DAY IS QUIET. LOTS OF SUN IN THE MORNING. AND THEN CLOUDS INCREASE. WE’RE IN THE 30S, COMING UP FOR HIGH TEMPERATURES TOMORROW, BUT ALL THE WHILE WE’RE GOING TO BE WATCHING THE NEXT STORM SYSTEM APPROACH FROM THE SOUTH AND WEST, AND IT’S GOING TO BRING IN SOME MILDER AIR ALOFT. SO AFTER AN INITIAL BURST OF SNOW, I THINK WE’RE LOOKING AT A CHANGEOVER TO SOME ICE. AND THAT SNOW COMES IN ABOUT 11:00 AT NIGHT WEDNESDAY NIGHT. AND YOU CAN SEE WE’RE SNOWING UNTIL ABOUT 5:00 IN THE MORNING NORTH OF THE PIKE. BUT LOOK AT THIS PINK AREA THAT IS INDICATING SOME SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN. YOU’RE GOING TO FLIP TO ALL RAIN THROUGH PARTS OF THE SOUTH SHORE, THE CAPE AND THE ISLANDS. AND THEN AS WE GET DEEPER INTO THE MORNING, A LOT OF THE PRECIPITATION MOVES OUT. BUT WE’RE GOING TO BE DEALING WITH THIS LINGERING AREA OF FREEZING DRIZZLE THROUGH ABOUT MID TO LATE MORNING OR SO NORTH AND WEST OF BOSTON. THIS WHOLE THING SHOULD TEND TO DRY OUT AND WRAP UP AROUND MIDDAY, SO A GLAZE OF ICE IS POSSIBLE HERE. ANYWHERE ABOUT A 10TH OF AN INCH OF ICE POTENTIALLY. THAT IS ENOUGH TO MAKE THINGS VERY SLIPPERY. SO THE FARTHER NORTH AND WEST YOU LIVE, ESPECIALLY AT 4.95 LINGERING ICE POTENTIAL THROUGH THE MID TO LATE MORNING HOURS HERE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A LOT OF SNOW. MAYBE JUST A COATING IN SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS. OTHERWISE AN INCH OR TWO WITH UP TO THREE INCHES IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. THAT’S THE FIRST SYSTEM WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY. WE’VE GOT ANOTHER ONE COMING IN THIS WEEKEND, AND THIS ONE LOOKS LIKE IT MAY START AS SNOW SATURDAY NIGHT AND THEN MAYBE GO TO RAIN. WE’RE WATCHING THE TRACK WITH THIS ONE, BUT RIGHT NOW IT DOES LOOK LIKE THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR MORE SNOW IS GOING TO BE UP NORTH IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH THIS ONE, WHICH WOULD BE A GREAT THING. OF COURSE, IT’S PRESIDENTS DAY ON MONDAY, SO A LONG WEEKEND KICKING OFF SCHOOL VACATION WEEK HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS. SOME SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS WOULD BE GREAT FOR SKIING, BUT AGAIN, WE’RE WATCHING THE TRACK ON THAT ONE AND IT IS A WAYS OUT. WE’VE GOT PLENTY BEFO

There is a potential to see a coating to an inch of snow,” Fitzgibbon said. Another round of stormy weather is expected to arrive from Wednesday night into Thursday. “The next storm system is going to approach from the south and west. After an initial burst of snow, we are looking at a change over to ice and rain,” Fitzgibbon said. “The snow moves in at 11 p.m. and it will snow through 5 a.m.”Areas north and west of Boston will deal with a lingering area of freezing drizzle through mid-morning. Up to 3 inches of snow is possible in areas of higher elevation.
