After up to 10 inches of snow fell in areas across the Baton Rouge metro Tuesday, closures are growing longer as Louisiana grapples with ice on roadways and freezing temperatures.
That also means some school districts will have a third consecutive snow day.
Ascension Parish was the first public school district to pull the plug on Thursday in-person school, citing potentially “hazardous travel conditions.” It followed the lead of the parish and municipal governments in Ascension. Ascension’s move was followed by Iberville Parish public schools.
Southern University in Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Community College and River Parishes Community College have announced that they likewise are staying closed through Thursday.
Temperatures remained below freezing all day Tuesday and are forecast to rise above freezing only briefly Wednesday afternoon.
Many K-12 schools and districts, including Ascension and Iberville, are also continuing with limited schooling virtually, most often in the form of take-home print work or do-on-your-own lessons posted online.
K-12 schools, as well as colleges and universities, began their closure announcements last week and have repeatedly extended them as the severity and longevity of the weather grew closer and finally became a chilly reality.
Public school closure announcements have prompted charter and private schools to follow suit. All schools in the Diocese of Baton Rouge have closed, in deference to diocesan practice to follow the closing decisions of the public school districts they are situated in unless otherwise noted. Current Catholic school closures are being posted online at diobr.org/news.
Only one school, Prescott Academy, a charter school in Baton Rouge, remained open Tuesday, but the school did not provide transportation for students and absences were excused.
The following schools are closed Wednesday as a result of the wintry weather. The schools staying closed Thursday are noted as well. Check school websites for more information.
