Nick Lodolo
Through three starts this season, Nick Lodolo has been dominant for the Reds. He allowed two runs in 6.0 innings in his season debut and hasn’t allowed any earned runs since. His ERA currently sits at 0.96 on the season and he’s walked just one batter.
Last year the splits for Lodolo were intriguing. Left-handed hitters had a higher average and walked at a higher rate against him than righties did. But they also hit for absolutely no power at all. Right-handed hitters didn’t hit for much average, but when they did pick up hits they hit for a solid amount of power.
The home and road splits were large. Away from Cincinnati Lodolo’s ERA was 3.56, but at home it was 6.09. His OPS split was just as big, with hitters posting an OPS of .521 on the road against him but sat at .869 at home.

To be very specific here, the Luis Castillo pitching against the Cincinnati Reds today is the one who also happened to pitch for the Reds from 2017 through July of 2022. Seattle has cornered the market on the Luis Castillo’s of the world and have used two different starting pitchers in their rotation with the name this season.
Through three starts this season, Castillo has been quite good. He’s given up just four runs in 17.0 innings. Last season the splits were big for the right-handed starter. He dominated righties and help them to a sub .600 OPS. Left-handed hitters, though, did plenty of damage against him. They hit for a good average and showed off plenty of power. His home and road splits were sizeable, too. His ERA on the road was 4.25 (3.15 at home) and hitters had an OPS of .764 against him away from Seattle (.656 at home).

News and Notes
Roster Moves
The Reds made five moves today. They activated Matt McLain, Austin Hays, and Alexis Diaz from the injured list. They also sent Jacob Hurtubise and Noelvi Marte to Triple-A Louisville. You can read more about all of that from our piece earlier today if you would like.
America’s Most Sideways Pitcher
Michael Baumann of Fangraphs wrote about Nick Lodolo this morning. He refers to the lefty in many ways, including America’s Most Sideways Pitcher due to the extreme angle he pitches at. Baumann notes just how good Lodolo’s been this season, but he really gets into how good his change up as been and what’s different about it this year compared to last.
