Carolina controlled the first overtime period from beginning to end, outshooting the Devils 14-3. Jacob Markstrom came up big time and again with some outstanding saves.
A minute into the double OT, Dawson Mercer clipped Jesperi Kotkaniemi with a high stick and drew blood, getting a four-minute penalty.
With 53 seconds left in the double minor, the Hurricanes scored to win the series, four games to one.
Less than four minutes into the game, the Devils opened the scoring. A shot from the point by Brett Pesce floated towards the net and went in off Dawson Mercer.
Not two minutes later, Timo Meier’s shot from long range beat Kochetkov through the five-hole to double the Devils’ lead.
The first penalty of the game went to the Hurricanes. Eric Robinson was called for interference near the midway point of the opening frame.
Three seconds after the man advantage expired, the Devils’ power play finally registered one even though it didn’t count as one officially. Stefan Noesen tipped a point shot from Simon Nemec that trickled in and made it 3-0 for the visitors.
After one period, shots on goal were 13-9 for the Devils.
At the end of the first, Cody Glass took a penalty for interference, giving the Hurricanes their first man advantage of the night. They had some good sustained pressure in the Devils end and didn’t quite capitalize on the power play but four seconds after it expired, there was a scramble in front of the net before Taylor Hall eventually poked in a loose puck that was sitting on the goal line, narrowing the Devils lead to two goals.
Just 2:15 later, Jackson Blake picked up the puck behind the net and wrapped it around, sticking it short side on Markstrom to make it a one-goal game.
Carolina tied it 1:39 after that, making it three goals in less than four minutes. Andrei Svechnikov fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle, beating Markstrom inside the post on his glove side.
Nico Hischier put the Devils back in the lead 1:46 after Carolina tied it. His shot from the right circle beat Kochetkov to make it a 4-3 game.
With Tomas Tatar in the box for another 55 seconds, Erik Haula was called for tripping which set up a two-man advantage. With 12 seconds to go in the Tatar penalty, Sebastian Aho one-timed a blast from the right circle to once again tie the game.
After two periods, shots on goal were 24-19 for the Devils.
The teams traded power plays in the third but neither was able to convert.
Markstrom made a couple of unbelievable stops on Logan Stankoven with 1:15 to go in the third.
After regulation, shots were 35-31 for the Hurricanes.
