Popular streaming service announces price increases

LOS GATOS, California — The streaming service Netflix saw a surge in subscribers in 2024 and on Tuesday announce earnings beyond the expectations of analysts.

The company also announced that subscribers in the U.S. will see price increases.

According to CNBC, Netflix’s standard plan without commercials will increase from $15.49 per month to $17.99. A cheaper, ad-supported plan will increase from $6.99 per month to $7.99, and the premium plan will increase from $22.99 to $24.99 per month.

“As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to further improve Netflix,” the company said in a letter to investors, according to Variety. “To that end, we are adjusting prices today across most plans in the U.S., Canada, Portugal and Argentina (which was already factored into the 2025 guidance we provided in October 2024).”

The company reported Tuesday that it added 19 million subscribers during the holiday-season quarter, thanks in large part to live events such as the November boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, and two NFL games on Christmas Day. It also received a boost with the second season of the popular series “Squid Games.”

Netflix reported $1.9 billion in earnings during the quarter, or $4.27 per share, nearly doubling from the same time in 2023. Revenue climbed 16% from the same 2023 period to $10.2 billion.

Netflix finished 2024 with more than 300 million subscribers, an increase of 41 million from 2023. The company plans to increase subscription prices in Canada, Portugal and Argentina as well.
