Police provide new details, seek motive in New Albany warehouse shooting

NEW ALBANY, Ohio — A man accused of fatally shooting one person and wounding five others inside a New Albany warehouse Tuesday night used a rideshare to leave the scene, avoiding officers who arrived minutes later, law enforcement officials revealed.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Bruce Reginald Foster III, was arrested at a home on East 7th Avenue near the Short North Arts District sometime after 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to New Albany officials.

According to a warrant filed in Licking County Court of Common Pleas, Foster is charged with aggravated murder in the shooting at KDC/One.

Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers arrived at the facility on Smiths Mill Road North on a report of an active shooter situation. Police found six people who were shot.

One of the shooting victims was pronounced dead at the scene. The other five were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police did not release additional information on their conditions, but did say that the shooting victims were all employees.

During a Wednesday afternoon update, New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones said officers arrived at the warehouse within four minutes of getting reports of shots fired. Jones added officers “just missed” Foster, who used a rideshare service to leave the scene. There’s no belief that the driver had any role in the shooting.

Special Agent in Charge Daryll McCormick with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Foster legally owned the gun used in the shooting, which McCormick described as a 9 mm Glock 26.

Jones previously said the shooting appeared to have been a targeted attack, but there is no clear motive yet.

“He chose to commit this act of violence at work,” Jones said. “Targeted in the respect that it was the people that he works with.”

Jones confirmed Foster was working “for some time” before the shooting. Employees interviewed by police said there was not any type of confrontation.

Foster is scheduled to be in court Thursday afternoon.
