Philadelphia is set to receive its biggest snowfall of the year Tuesday afternoon, with enough of an impact to push back the Eagles’ Super Bowl parade to Friday.
In their latest forecast Tuesday morning, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly said Philadelphia is expected to receive somewhere between 3 and 4 inches of snow.
If those numbers are accurate, it would qualify as the highest snow totals of the season, topping the 2 inches that fell on Jan. 19. All told, the city has received just 4.9 inches of snow — by comparison, New Orleans was buried under 8 inches of snow in a rare winter storm last month, just a few weeks before the Super Bowl.
The farther south you go, the more snow it looks like you’re receive. Areas south of I-95 in Delaware and much of South Jersey could receive upward of 6 inches, with snow falling at a rate of 1 inch per hour. Cape May could be looking at as much as 8 inches of snow.
The weather service has posted a winter weather advisory for the immediate Philadelphia area, and a winter storm warning for most of Delaware and parts of South Jersey, including the Shore, where several inches could accumulate.
What time will the snow start in Philly today?
The snow is expected to begin sometimes between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Philadelphia, so you can bet it will impact the evening commute, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest snow in the city is expected between 7 p.m. and midnight tonight, ending in the early Wednesday morning hours.
In Delaware and South Jersey, the snow is expected to begin a little earlier — between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. — with the heaviest falling around 6 p.m., forecasters said.
Super Bowl parade weather forecast
After a break in precipitation tomorrow, Philadelphia is expected to receive something between rain and a wintry mix from a second storm likely to begin late Wednesday afternoon or early evening that would continue into Thursday morning.
Things will warm up a bit after that, with temperatures Thursday rising into the 40s, enough to melt what doesn’t get washed away tomorrow.
It should be sunny on Friday for the parade, with temperatures reaching the high 30s.
