Patriots Rumors: Joe Milton III Traded Away In Splash Deal

The Patriots finally pulled the trigger with Joe Milton III.

New England has been wrestling with whether or not it wanted to sell high on the young quarterback throughout the early portion of the offseason, and finally did so Thursday. Milton was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for late-round draft pick compensation, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media confirmed the news, sharing that Dallas will send a fifth-round pick in exchange for Milton and a seventh-round pick from New England.

Milton essentially wanted out, with MassLive’s Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian reporting on Wednesday that the 25-year-old “would prefer to be on a roster that best gives him a chance to compete for the starting job.” Dallas technically qualifies, as starting quarterback Dak Prescott has played only two full seasons in the last five years.

The Patriots brought in Josh Dobbs this offseason as insurance for a potential trade, leaving the club with adequate depth behind second-year signal-caller Drake Maye.
