Mount St. Mary’s seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament ended Friday in defeat.While not the Mount’s first time appearing in the First Round face a No. 1 seed, Friday afternoon’s game marked their first-ever game against Duke. Coming into the game, the Mountaineers were 2-26 all-time against ACC opponents.Tyrese Proctor had 19 points and freshman star Cooper Flagg returned from an ankle injury as Duke beat Mount St. Mary’s 93-49. Flagg had 14 points and seven boards for the Blue Devils (32-3).Duke jumped to a 13-2 lead in a dominant first half marked by clean execution on the way to a big lead. Duke led 54-28 by halftime after shooting 60.6% while committing just one turnover.The Blue Devils cooled after the break, but finished at 50% shooting with 14 3-pointers to cruise toward a second-round date with Baylor. Proctor went 6 for 8 from deep.Arlandus Keyes scored 15 points for the Mountaineers. Mount St. Mary’s shot 30.2% from the field, including 5 for 27 on 3s. The Mountaineers advanced to the First Round with an 83-72 victory over American on Wednesday. In that game, the Mount shot 57.7% in the game and led by as many as 19 points, while Dola Adebayo and Jedy Cordilia each matched their career high with 22 points, and Dallas Hobbs added 17.Over the past 15 games, the Mountaineers have held opponents to 38.1% shooting with a +8.8 rebound edge.The Mount finished the season 23-12, the most wins for them since joining Division I in 1988-89.Coming into Friday’s game, the Mountaineers were 0-4 all-time in the NCAA First Round, having lost to No. 1 seeds Kentucky (113-67) in 1995, Michigan State (76-63) in 1999, North Carolina (113-74) in 2008 and Villanova (76-56) in 2017.
