As if navigating the Met Gala carpet isn’t tricky enough — think: constricting high fashion meets treacherous staircase — some stars aren’t dissuaded from taking it to the next level with a midway wardrobe transformation. We’re looking at you, Colman Domingo.
The actor, an event cochair tonight, arrived wearing a custom pleated blue Valentino robe with a bolero top, along with Boucheron earring cuffs. It’s said to be a nod to late Vogue editor at large André Leon Talley, who was known for his dandy style and wore a blue robe in 2011.

Domingo’s look was throwing off royal vibes — until he threw it off. Midway through the carpet, he removed the cape to show another Valentino look: a black-and-white jacket adorned with pearls, a multicolored striped button-down and gray pants. He accessorized with a polka-dot scarf and a large flower on his lapel.

There have been many great unveilings on the gala carpet through the years. Lady Gaga took things to a new level when she went through three outfit changes in 2019, ending up in sparkly undies and fishnets. In 2022, Blake Lively surprised onlookers as handlers unraveled her dress to show a two-in-one look inspired by New York City architecture.
Meanwhile, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are both known for making Met switcheroos. In 2021, he dropped his thrifted quilt to unveil his dapper suit. In 2023, Rihanna opened her white floral cape and removed her cat-eye sunglasses with dramatically long eyelashes to show a form-fitting white gown hugging her pregnant belly.
It’s one thing to bring the glam for the gala. It’s totally next-level to chameleon on the way up the stairs.
