Maryland basketball has found its next coach. The Terps have hired Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams to fill the role vacated by Kevin Willard’s departure to Villanova, sources told InsideMDSports.
Williams, has a career 373-228 record (.621), including stops at New Orleans, Marquette, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. Between 2010 and 2013, he led Marquette to two Sweet 16s and an Elite Eight before moving on to Virginia Tech, where he reached the NCAA Tournament in three of five years and made the Sweet 16 in 2019. Then he took a job in his home state at Texas A&M, where he’s posted a .622 winning percentage and gone 56-44 in conference play.
Carter Karels of Gigem247 wrote earlier this week:
“Over the last few days, GigEm247 caught up with multiple sources to learn more about Williams and the ongoing situation. Per Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports, Kevin Willard agreed Saturday night to depart from his role as head coach at the University of Maryland to take the same job at Villanova. Both athletic departments confirmed that news Sunday. While the rumors surrounding Willard circulated before his final decision became public, multiple sources indicated Williams began actively expressing interest in the Maryland job. Now that the position is officially vacant, the Terrapins consider Williams a candidate.”
It appears Maryland was waiting to hire Williams because his buyout decreases today. Karels wrote:
“The timing with Williams and his buyout is worth noting. Per the contract extension Williams signed in 2023, which GigEm247 obtained through an open records request, he would owe A&M liquidated damages of $2 million for taking another job on or before Monday. But if Williams left for another job Tuesday or later, his owed liquidated damages would drop to $1 million. The contract otherwise is not set to expire until March 31, 2028.”
This report will be updated.
