Joshua Zirkzee has his seventh of the season in his 45th game in all competitions, and just his fourth in 24.

Kobbie Mainoo was alive to a bouncing second ball in midfield, getting there swiftly and nodding it forward into the path of team-mate Bruno Fernandes, who has — as ever — been United’s most creative player in attack.

Fernandes had time and space outside the penalty area, no one close enough, and the Portuguese stood an excellent curling cross up to the back post in search of Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee, positioned brilliantly, waited for the ball to come down, marker Clinton Mata desperately back-pedalling to get there.

He couldn’t, Zirkzee wasn’t put off, and powered a header in at the near post past a helpless Lucas Perri in goal. Great finish, nothing Perri could do.
