Remember that Boygenius red-carpet interview where Lucy Dacus said that Julien Baker (the so-called “little one” of the group) is tall in her heart? The New Yorker confirmed in a recent profile of Dacus that she is in a “committed relationship” with Baker. One could argue that the pair’s Halloween couple’s costume in 2023 already spoke volumes, but this is technically the first official confirmation that they are together. The New Yorker piece notes that Dacus didn’t necessarily want to hide the relationship, but is still figuring out how much she wants to share about her love life. “It’s been interesting, because I want to protect what is precious in my life, but also to be honest, and make art that’s true,” the singer reflected. “I think maybe a part of it is just trusting that it’s not at risk. Maybe a healthier way to think about it is that it’s not actually fragile.”
The New Yorker describes Dacus’s upcoming solo album Forever Is a Feeling as a “gorgeous and tender album about falling in love.” She pointed out the songs on the 13-track project, out March 28, are “about different people.” However, she did acknowledge at least one track title that feels like an obvious reference: “You know, ‘Most Wanted Man in West Tennessee’— what are you gonna do?” (Baker was born and raised outside of Memphis, which is in west Tennessee.) The lyrics are addressed to someone in a restaurant whose hand is “Gripping on my inner thigh like if you don’t I’m gonna run / But I’m not going anywhere, least not anywhere you’re not.”
Dacus said it’s not unusual for her to date friends or collaborators; in fact, that seems to be her preference. “Almost every relationship I have been in, we’ve had some business or creative dealings, I don’t mean this just sexually, but it turns me on,” she said. “To have your minds meet on something, and be, like, ‘Oh, my gosh, you said what I couldn’t say. I love your mind.’ ” Bet it’s been great getting to make music and tour with Baker as part of Boygenius, then — and shout-out to Bridgers for being a great third wheel.
