The Dallas Mavericks (39-42) and Memphis Grizzlies (47-34) link up on the final day of the NBA regular season with Western Conference postseason positioning still at stake for both squads (3:30 ET, NBA League Pass). Here are five things to know before game action.
- Mavs fighting for No. 9 seed: Dallas took down the Raptors on Friday night to give them identical records with the 10th-seeded Sacramento Kings, who fell to the LA Clippers. They are tied in the standings entering Sunday, but the Kings swept the Mavericks in the regular season, meaning Dallas needs to beat Memphis and have Sacramento lose to Phoenix to secure home court for the 9 vs. 10 SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament matchup. If the Mavs lose Sunday, however, they’ll finish as the 10th seed and have to travel to Sacramento for their Play-In game.
- Anthony Davis bouncing back: Davis rebounded from the Mavericks’ emotional loss to the L.A. Lakers on Wednesday with a dominant performance against Toronto on Friday. AD had 23 points (10-for-18 FGs), 13 rebounds, 10 assists and a season-high seven blocks in a little over 30 minutes, recording his first triple-double of the season and his first with Dallas. In two games against Memphis this season (both as a Laker), Davis has averaged 30.5 points, 15.0 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 2.0 blocks while shooting 55.3% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range.
- Grizzlies headed for Play-In: Memphis has lost two straight after winning three in a row, dropping the team to eighth in the West and locking into the Play-In via tiebreakers. A loss won’t change anything for the Grizzlies, but a win and a Minnesota loss to Utah would move them into seventh, giving them two attempts at home to earn a spot in the playoffs.
- Desmond Bane heating up: Bane has turned up his scoring output down the stretch for Memphis, and he’s doing it efficiently. Sunday would mark his 70th game played in 2024-25, a number he will reach for the second time in his five-year career, and most since 2021-22 when he suited up for 76 games. In his last four outings, Bane has gone for 27.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists on shooting splits of 57.7% FG/53.3% 3PT/100.0% FT in 34.1 minutes a night.
Ja Morant in takeover mode: Morant has seen a drop in his scoring average in each of the past three seasons, but he’s been dialed in over the last month with the postseason approaching. Since March 5, Morant is fifth in the NBA with 29.8 points per game on 50.0% shooting, adding 4.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.2 steals over 33.2 minutes per contest. In five April outings, he’s averaging 30.2 points while draining 41.3% of his 9.2 three-point attempts a night, scoring 30-plus in three of those five games.
