Lay’s recalls thousands of its classic potato chips over life-threatening concerns, here is why

Lay’s has issued a recall for thousands of its Classic Potato Chips in the US after it was revealed that some bags contained an undeclared allergen that could be life-threatening for certain individuals.

The recall, which was announced on January 27, 2025, has been classified as a Class 1 recall by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning there is a high risk of serious health consequences or even death. The recall affects 6,344 bags of 13-ounce Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, sold across retail and online stores in Oregon and Washington.

The issue was identified after a consumer alerted Lay’s to the presence of milk in the product, a major allergen that was not declared on the packaging. For those with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity, consuming these chips could result in serious health issues or death.

Consumers are urged to check their bags for the Guaranteed Fresh Date of February 11, 2025 and the Manufacturing Codes starting with 6462307 or 6463307. The affected bags were distributed in Oregon and Washington and were available for purchase starting November 3, 2024.

No Reports of Allergic Reactions

According to a statement from Frito-Lay, no allergic reactions have been reported as of yet, and no other Lay’s products, flavours, sizes, or variety packs have been affected by the recall.

This recall comes as part of a wider issue of undeclared allergens in food products, including granola bars, pancake mixes, and sauces, which have also been pulled from shelves by the FDA in recent weeks.

Consumers who have purchased the affected bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips are advised to discard them immediately.
