“I have so many memories of him from my 20s. I even attended his first concert after releasing my debut album,” Paloalto said. “This is so shocking and heartbreaking. Thank you for being part of my youth with your music.”

Fans have taken to Wheesung’s social media accounts to express their sorrow and pay tribute.

Many shared their disbelief, offered condolences, and reflected on the comfort and joy his music brought them, with some leaving heartfelt messages such as “I can’t believe this,” “Rest in peace,” “Your music brought me so much comfort and happiness” and “Goodbye, my idol.”

Wheesung was found dead at his home in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, at around 6:29 p.m. Monday. His mother is reported to have discovered him there and called emergency services.

Police are investigating the cause of his death and requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service on Tuesday. There were no signs of forced entry or foul play, police said.

The R&B singer was scheduled to hold a joint concert, “The Story,” with ballad singer KCM in Daegu on Saturday. The event has been canceled.

Career of triumphs and personal struggles

Wheesung debuted in 2002 with “Can’t We?” and rose to fame with hits such as “With Me,” “The Day We Met Again,” “Insomnia” and “Even Thought of Marriage.”

The musician’s most notable accolades include the best new artist award at the 2002 Golden Disc Awards in Seoul, marking his breakthrough in the industry, and the best male artist award at the 2003 Mnet Music Video Festival (now MAMA), solidifying his position as one of Korea’s top R&B vocalists. He also won the artist of the year award at the KBS Music Awards in 2004 and 2005.

He was also a prolific producer, working with artists such as Younha and girl groups Orange Caramel, T-ara and Twice.

Wheesung also faced significant personal struggles.

In 2019, he was indicted on charges of illegal use of propofol, a sedative, and in 2020, he was found unconscious in a public restroom after reportedly using etomidate, another anesthetic.

Following the 2020 incident, Wheesung’s agency at the time, Real Slow Company, said, “He has been going through an incredibly difficult period due to the sudden passing of his father and close friends. He has been suffering from depression and panic disorder and has been receiving psychiatric treatment.”

In 2021, Wheesung was given a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years.
