Iowa women’s basketball vs Oklahoma recap: Hawkeyes fall in March Madness second round

4:59 pm CT March 24, 2025

FINAL: 96-62 Oklahoma

Gus Martin

Iowa women’s basketball season is over.

It was a fun ride for a team that had to follow up the greatest stretch in program history. Lucy Olsen gave it her all, finishing with 20 points.

Q4 2:15, 88-54 Oklahoma — Iowa players get ovations

Gus Martin

Affolter and Olsen get subbed out to applause and were emotional on the sidelines.

Just a terrific season from both of them, especially Olsen, who engrained herself into the Iowa culture and fan base.

Q4 5:14, 79-50 Oklahoma

Gus Martin

It’s probably over for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes have committed 19 turnover and are losing the rebounding battle 55-31. Almost no team can overcome those discrepancies.

Just a tough day all around for Iowa.

End 3: 68-43 Oklahoma — Jensen called for a tech

Gus Martin

Feuerbach hit her third triple of the afternoon. She probably needed to be more of a consistent option offensively after making two 3s early. She’s take just four.

Jensen was also called for a technical foul, perhaps letting out some frustration from how this quarter has gotten away from her team.

OU shot 14 free throws in that frame, making any chance at Iowa keeping up that much harder.

Q3 2:27, 59-38 Oklahoma — Game getting away from Iowa

Gus Martin

Nice score by Stuelke out of the timeout to stop the bleeding, but as has often been the case today, Oklahoma responds with a score after and Iowa bucket.

After hitting just two triples in the first half, Oklahoma is 4-of-6 from downtown here in the third. With as much attention Iowa has put toward stopping Beers from scoring down low, the Sooners are now taking advantage of the extra room to shoot.

Q3 7:43, 49-32 — Sooners get hot from deep

Gus Martin

A pair of free throws after the replay review on Stuelke and back-to-back triples has Oklahoma putting Iowa on the ropes.

Affolter has really struggled today. She’s 0-for-6 from the floor as Iowa is desperate to find someone to provide offense besides Olsen (18 points).

Hawkeyes need a spark, fast.

Q3 8:52, 38-29 Oklahoma — Slow start for both sides

Gus Martin

Stuelke got the scoring started after about one minute with a crafty reverse layup, but Stuelke seemed to accidentally hit Beers in the face during the layup motion and the referees are reviewing the play.

Beers walked off the floor on her own power but needed a little assistance.

The second half is underway!

Gus Martin

Iowa will need to buckle down and find more diverse offense in order to keep its season alive.

Halftime: 38-27 Oklahoma — Sloppy half

Gus Martin

Although the pace of this game has been fast, I can’t say that was a high-quality half of basketball for either team.

Iowa had 12 turnovers and shot just 33.3%, while OU shot 37.8% and missed 14 3-point attempts.

Yet the Hawkeyes are still within striking distance and can easily close the gap if they clean things up. Olsen leads with 15 points and hit a feel-good triple from the corner just before the buzzer.

Only 3 other Iowa players have scored, however. Someone needs to step up and help Olsen out.

Q2 4:28, 32-21 Oklahoma — Iowa can’t gain ground

Gus Martin

After an 18-1 run, Olsen hit a baseline jumper to end Iowa’s field-goal drought of several minutes.

Stuelke then again went at Beers in the post, drawing another foul and sending OU’s All-American to the bench. Smart move by Stuelke, but Beers has not been an issue for Iowa thus far.

Sahara Williams has been the main driver for the Sooners. She has 13 points and six rebounds.

It was a fun stretch of player over the last couple of minutes with both sides trading buckets.

End 1: 20-11 Oklahoma — Sooners explode

Gus Martin

An 16-1 run gave Oklahoma a big lead. Iowa got very sloppy with the ball during that stretch and is up to eight turnovers.

Stuelke used a nice post move to draw a foul and get to the line to end the drought, but the Sooners kept the pressure on thereafter.

Hawkeyes must regroup fast.

Q1 4:34, 10-8 Iowa — Good start for Hawkeyes

Gus Martin

Olsen got the first score for Iowa, and Feuerbach got a triple to fall from the corner and another from the wing. No hesitation.

Good sign if she can shoot in rhythm today.

Stuelke also got on the board and drew a foul on Oklahoma’s star big, Raegan Beers.

Great defense by Iowa so far, forcing four turnovers and allow no open shots.

Jensen also deployed a Stuelke and Heiden lineup after the first four minutes, likely a matchup-specific adjustment to counteract the Sooner’s size. It didn’t bode well initially as OU won those minutes 4-0.

  • Dargan Southard, HawkCentral: Iowa cashes in all its experience gained from this year and the last two seasons, sticking Oklahoma with hosting pressure the Hawkeyes have felt before. • Ryan Aber, The Oklahoman: Iowa has the tournament experience, even without Caitlin Clark from the teams that were national runners-up in back-to-back seasons. The Hawkeyes shoot 46.7% from the floor (top 20 nationally), and dish out 18.1 assists per game (also among the nation’s best). But OU shoots 45.9% and leads the nation in assists per game at 21.9. The interior tandem of Raegan Beers and Skylar Vann makes the difference, and Peyton Verhulst bounces back on the perimeter after shooting just 1 for 5 from beyond the arc in the first round. The game is tight throughout but the Sooners find a final defensive stop to secure the victory. OU 76, Iowa 73:
