Iowa men’s basketball‘s Big Ten Tournament run ended with a 106-94 second-round loss to Illinois on Thursday in Indianapolis.

The Hawkeyes spent much of the second half down a coach.

At the 13:33 mark of the second half at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, head coach Fran McCaffery was ejected from the contest after being assessed back-to-back technical fouls by one of the officials. The Hawkeyes were trailing by nine points at the time.

Though he was seen chirping with the official along the sidelines, it is unknown what exactly led to back-to-back technical fouls being assessed to him in a span of 10 seconds that led to his ejection. The first technical foul given to McCaffery came as guard Brock Harding brought the ball across half court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Big Ten Network’s broadcast then picked up McCaffery, who was being brought back by members of his coaching staff, shouting toward the official — which then prompted the second technical foul to be given.

“That is such a mistake,” Big Ten Network analyst Robbie Hummel said of McCaffery’s ejection.

McCaffery is known for his emotion on the sidelines, though Thursday’s technical fouls were his first of the season. He is in his 15th season with the Hawkeyes and holds an overall record of 297-206 in Iowa City.
