HBO announced on Monday that it has finalized two key roles in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series — Professor Quirinus Quirrell and Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch.

British stage actor Luke Thallon will take on the role of the nervous Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, who has more to him than meets the eye. Actor Ian Hart previously portrayed Quirrell in the first Potter film. Thallon, 29, is a theater standout, who most recently played Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Thallon is relatively unknown in the film and TV world, recently telling Deadline, “I would love to do something on screen. I really would. There’s no pretending that I turn lots of things down, but I’m just waiting for the reason to go to screen to be as exciting and as fulfilling as the things I get to do on stage now.“

Five-time BAFTA winner Paul Whitehouse has landed the role of the villainous Filch, which was originated by David Bradley in the eight Potter films.

Whitehouse, 66, is a Welsh actor and comedian, known for his work in British comedies like The Fast Show and Harry & Paul. He also worked with director Tim Burton on The Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland and had a role in 2017’s The Death of Stalin

Thallon and Whitehouse join the growing cast of the HBO series, which is being executive produced by Potter author J.K. Rowling. Thus far American actor John Lithgow has been cast as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore. In the films, Dumbledore was played by both Richard Harris and later Michael Gambon after Harris’ death in 2002.

McTeer, 63, is a two-time Oscar nominee, who has had notable roles in Ozark, Me Before You, The Woman in Black, Into the Storm and who played the goddess Hera opposite Jeff Goldblum’s Zeus in the short-lived mythology series Kaos

British comedian Nick Frost, who is best known for his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy films like Shaun of the Dead with longtime friend and collaborator Simon Pegg, is taking on the beloved part of gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. Hagrid was originated by the late Robbie Coltrane

“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life,” said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer in a news release.

The series has yet to cast the core roles of the magical pals Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, which were originated by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the hit films. No premiere date has been set for the series, which HBO calls a “faithful adaptation” of the seven Potter books.
