GREEN BAY – Brian Gutekunst is really counting on internal improvement from his pass rush this season.
Instead of addressing a pass rush that forced Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to alter his scheme midway through last fall, relying on a blitz scheme rather than rushing predominately with four, the focus of this draft has been helping quarterback Jordan Love. The Packers used their third straight draft pick on offense, their second on a receiver, selected Texas Christian wide receiver Savion Williams with the 87th overall pick in the third round.
Williams is a big receiver, measuring 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds. His size will provide a complement to first-round draft pick Matthew Golden, a 4.29-second 40-yard dash speedster who measured 5-11, 191. Williams ran an impressive 4.48 40 at the NFL scouting combine.
As a senior last year, Williams caught 60 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns.
