Gears of War coming to PS5 with 4K remaster

Step aside, Oblivion, there’s a new 20-year-old game getting the 4K-remastered treatment. The original Gears of War, first released in 2006, will be re-released as Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Yes, you read that right: Gears of War is coming to PlayStation.

Over the past year, Xbox has started tearing the walls of its exclusivity. In the past year, Xbox has ported games like Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to PS5. But the big three Xbox tentpoles — Forza, Gears of War, and Halo — remained stalwart, until just last week, when Forza Horizon 5 was released on PS5. With today’s announcement, the oft-rumored prospect of seeing Master Chief on PlayStation no longer seems far-fetched.

Much like other recent remasters of older games, Gears of War: Reloaded features spruced-up visuals. It’ll feature 4K resolution and be playable at 60 FPS — or at up to 120 FPS if your display can support that. All multiplayer maps and modes will be available from launch, as is all DLC. And according to an Xbox press release, the campaign won’t have any loading screens between levels.

Gears of War: Reloaded will sell for $40, though if you purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition — an Xbox One remaster released in 2015 — prior to today’s announcement, Gears of War: Reloaded will be available as a free upgrade. It’ll also be included as part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library.

Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel set 14 years before the events of Gears of War, still does not have a release window.
