Gauff crashes out of Miami Open in straight sets

No 3 seed Coco Gauff is out of the Miami Open, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Pole Magda Linette at the Hard Rock Stadium on Monday.

Gauff struggled to find her range over the course of the one-hour, 29-minute match, landing just 51 percent of first serves, making 12 double faults and committing 45 unforced errors to just 18 winners.

The victory marks Linette’s best win by ranking on the WTA Tour, and takes her through to the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the second time.

“Beating Coco for the first time is a huge achievement for me,” Linette said after the match.

“She’s so tough. Even on her worst days, she’s so, so tough. Thank you so much everyone for making this atmosphere so nice.”

Linette, ranked No 34, will face Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 6 seed, next.

In the previous rounds of the Miami tournament, the 33-year-old Pole defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (7-6 (3), 6-2), Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 18 seed (7-6 (5), 6-2) and qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova (7-5, 6-4).

Gauff, ranked No 3, won against Sofia Kenin (6-0, 6-0) and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 28 seed (6-2, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
