HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ)- Mid-afternoon Sunday and Tornado Watches are out to our west covering parts of 7 states. From far southern Michigan south to far western Kentucky-Tennessee and Arkansas, the risk of high winds storms, some circular, is high.
The most likely time for storms to arrive in our area remains late this evening thru early Monday morning.
Original posting (1pm Sunday)
Early this Sunday afternoon, the morning shower pattern is winding down. Hannah told us last night that the morning rain would be non-severe. Spot on! Now, Sunday afternoon the weather will undergo a transformation. The air will grow more humid as the wind picks up from the south. When breaks in the overcast occur, we will be able to see clouds moving at a quicker pace from southwest to northeast. These are the ingredients for severe weather in the spring.
Meanwhile as of 1pm, the Storm Prediction Center, SPC, (the nation’s premier severe weather authority), has identified a sliver of western Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana as primed for the development of severe thunderstorms. This part of America’s heartland is now under a Tornado Watch. While the perfect conditions that exist for severe storms there are not expected to be present here tonight, there will be enough energy in the heavens and moisture at ground level to raise our awareness for heavy weather.
So, this afternoon-evening will see several good hours for outdoor fun with a just passing thunder shower possible. By sundown, our attention will turn to the storm pattern coming from Indiana-Louisville-Cincinnati. There are likely to be a few swaths of thunderstorms spat out in our direction. We will monitor the progress of these storms as well as any new storm watches issued by SPC.
While a lead storm line may kiss southern Ohio after sundown, as Hannah noted last night, the longer-lived, stronger storm line times in after many have gone to bed.
Power hits from strong winds will be the main threat when these storms pass. Should a new tornado or severe thunderstorm watch be issued for our region, it would be for the hours after dark into the overnight.
So, a FIRST ALERT NIGHT is ahead. Hannah has you covered all evening.
