Fire crews respond to brush fire in Rancho Bernardo

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fire crews are responding to an active brush fire burning in Rancho Bernardo Wednesday morning.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the department received the initial call around 8:55 a.m. The first unit of firefighters arrived shortly after 9 a.m., SDFD said on its website. Forward spread was stopped at four acres around 11 a.m.

What was dubbed the “Bernardo Fire” is located in the area of Bernardo Center Drive and Camino Del Norte, near Interstate 15, according to reports.

A temporary evacuation center was set up at 12080 Carmel Mountain Rd., the location of an At Home store and parking lot.

The county of San Diego’s evacuation map can be found below. Areas in red are under an evacuation order, from Dove Canyon Road to the west, Camino Del Norte to the north, I-15 to the east and Carmel Mountain Road to the south. This information is current as of 10 a.m.

Areas currently under an evacuation warning are highlighted in yellow. These areas stretch as far south as Black Mountain Open Space Park, west and north bordered by Camino Del Sur, and east toward Dove Canyon Road.

Authorities say there is an immediate structure threat due to the fire. SDFD posted an update on X/Twitter, saying there is potential for the fire to grow to 100 acres. At 10:20 a.m., they confirmed to FOX 5/KUSI that the potential to spread has changed to 20 acres. One person has been taken to the hospital with burn injuries, per authorities.

At 10:11 a.m., the San Diego Police Department stated the following roads are closed to the public: I-15 at Camino Del Norte, Bernardo Center and Camino Del Norte, Paseo Montanoso at Avenida De Los Lobos and Camino Del Norte.
