ESPN Announces Decision on National Anthem Before Ohio State-Notre Dame

On Monday night the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take the field for the College Football Playoff national title game at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Ohio State is attempting to win its ninth national title – at least as recognized by the NCAA – while Notre Dame hopes to add No. 14. The Buckeyes last title came in 2014, defeating Oregon in the inaugural College Football Playoff national championship game, while the Fighting Irish’s drought stretches back to 1988 when they defeated West Virginia 34-21 in the Fiesta Bowl.

As the title game draws near, ESPN revealed its decision regarding the national anthem before kickoff. The network took heat in recent weeks for not televising the national anthem before games.

That won’t be the case on Monday night as ESPN announced it will cover “America the Beautiful” and the national anthem while also celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

“With this year’s CFP National Championship being played in Atlanta on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, pregame coverage on ESPN will feature ‘America the Beautiful’ and the National Anthem, along with MLK-themed content, including ‘I Have a Dream’ imagery and quotes. ESPN will also share footage from a community outreach event at Hope Hill Elementary in Atlanta, hosted by the CFP and conference commissioners, as well as include shots from additional impactful landmarks,” ESPN said in an announcement.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is attempting to become the youngest coach since 1982 to win a national title – against his former team. Ryan Day, meanwhile, is attempting to quiet the critics of his program amid his failures to win the big game – either against Michigan or in postseason play.

Ohio State and Notre Dame kick off at 7:30 p.m EST on ESPN.
