If there’s one roast Charles Barkley is probably well-accustomed to hearing, it’s anyone mentioning his lack of championships at the men’s collegiate and NBA levels. The thing is, though, jokes about Barkley failing to reach the top of the mountain are a bit tired unless you creatively deliver them. At a certain point, you can’t always go for the low-hanging fruit. They have to come when you least expect it. They have to feel like a vicious emotional dunk from out of nowhere.
Fortunately, Barkley’s long-time TV moderator/host Ernie Johnson knows exactly how to blast his friend over his biggest basketball career blemish and otherwise.
During CBS’s coverage of March Madness on Sunday, Jay Wright and Kenny Smith both talked about their unique experiences cutting down the nets. Wright did it, of course, with Villanova on two separate occasions. Smith, meanwhile, never won a title during his time with North Carolina, but he did win two championships with the Houston Rockets. And as he explained, even if it isn’t an NBA tradition, Smith chose to cut down the nets in both instances, anyway.
When Smith finished his personal account, you could already see Johnson loading up his roast. While smiling, he rhetorically asked Barkley if he had a similar story and didn’t even give him a chance to answer before saying, “No, you don’t,” as the rest of the panel erupted in laughter. Unsurprisingly, a speechless Barkley had no comeback.
Man, that is stellar execution of a joke:
FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA men’s tournament bracket, scores, schedules, teams and more.
Johnson and Barkley are close friends, but for posterity, remind me never to get on Johnson’s bad side. This is a good example of what happens when you do that.
