Eric Dane has revealed he’s been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The actor, 52, told People magazine on Thursday, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” 

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a “nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS causes loss of muscle control. The disease gets worse over time,” according to the Mayo Clinic. There is no cure for the disease.

While Dane didn’t share many details surrounding his diagnosis, the actor — who plays the Jacobs family patriarch on Euphoria — told People he’s returning to set next week to continue filming season three of the hit HBO show.

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” he said. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

In addition to Euphoria, Dan is also known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, as well as Charmed, The Last Ship and Kabul.

Dane shares two teenage children with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart.
