Spencer Hubbard, originally from Los Angeles, originally joined the Duke basketball program as a member of the practice squad, but the 5-foot-8 guard has emerged as one of the most well-liked players on the team since he got a roster spot in 2021-22.
Hubbard doesn’t get many minutes, averaging fewer than three minutes per game in all four seasons with Duke; however, he made the most of his time on the court against Mount St. Mary’s in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The 16-seeded Mountaineers, who advanced after beating American in the First Four on Wednesday, stood no chance from the start, and Duke soared out to a big lead and only extended it in the second half. That’s where Hubbard was primed to shine, and that he did. Getting the ball in the corner, No. 55 made a quick move to the rim and put in a layup over a Mountaineers’ defender for his first career March Madness field goal.
The bench loved what they saw, as evidenced by the reaction below.
Hubbard scored a point in the second round against James Madison in the second round of last year’s run to the Elite Eight, but it came on a free throw.

Duke won 93-49 to advance to the second round in the East Region, where the Baylor Bears and former Blue Devils star Jeremy Roach await. The Blue Devils should open up as more than double-digit favorites in the battle against the region’s No. 9 seed.
