WASHINGTON — The FAA said Wednesday night that an American Airlines flight collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport at around 9 p.m. 

“A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time. PSA was operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines,” the FAA said Wednesday night. “It departed from Wichita, Kansas. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation.”

According to a brochure from Bombardier CRJ Series, the jet can hold up to 78 people. Per a flight manifest, American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kan. had 60 passengers and four crew on board. 

A Black Hawk helicopter can transport up to “12 fully equipped, seated troops in combat,” according to Lockheed Martin, the weapons company that builds the helicopter. There are about 5,000 of these helicopters in use by the United States Military.
