Crews respond to house collapse in northwest Austin following reported explosion

AUSTIN, Texas — One house collapsed and multiple others were damaged following a reported explosion in northwest Austin on Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 11:25 a.m. at 10407 Double Spur Loop, near Spicewood Springs Road and U.S. 183, AFD said. AFD had incorrectly reported the address as Yaupon Drive earlier.

Around the same time, residents around the Austin area reported hearing and feeling an explosion in the area. Emergency officials are still investigating the source but believe the collapse was caused by a gas explosion, possibly propane.

AFD said a two-story house sustained damage from “an unknown event” that caused the house to collapse.

Three people were found inside the structure by AFD crews and pulled out. Those people were being treated by Austin-Travis County EMS medics. ATCEMS initially said there were reports of “multiple patients.”

One firefighter was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, AFD said.

Firefighters were extinguishing small spots of fire within the collapsed debris.

Authorities have closed a large area near the home, while nearby residents have evacuated the area. One other home partially collapsed in the incident and multiple other homes were heavily damaged.

As of around 12:30 p.m., power was also out in the area due to power lines damaged in the explosion. PEC crews are on the scene.

A neighbor told KVUE the house had recently been purchased and hadn’t been moved into yet.

The Leander Police Department said residents have reported hearing the explosion in that area, but the incident did not happen in Leander. The Cedar Park Police Department also said it was aware of a loud boom heard and felt throughout the city, but the reported explosion occurred in the Austin area.

No other information is available at this time.
