Cowboys QB depth chart after Dallas trades for Patriots QB Joe Milton

DALLAS COWBOYS

The Dallas Cowboys have traded for New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III. How has it affected the Cowboys‘ quarterback depth chart?

Dallas needed to bring in quarterback depth this offseason after Cooper Rush and Trey Lance hit free agency. Rush eventually signed with the Baltimore Ravens to be their new backup, and Lance is still a free agent.

Milton is expected to serve as starting quarterback Dak Prescott‘s primary backup in 2025. He spent just one year with the Patriots as their third-string quarterback. He appeared in one game after the team drafted him in the sixth round last year.

Here’s how Dallas’ quarterback room looks after trading for Joe Milton:

  1. Dak Prescott
  2. Joe Milton
  3. Will Grier

Prescott became the highest-paid player in the NFL late last offseason after the Cowboys signed him to a four-year, $240 million extension that included $231 million guaranteed. Despite what some April Fool’s Day jokes and erroneous reports have said, Prescott will not be traded by the Cowboys this offseason. His massive contract includes a no-trade clause, and the value of the deal alone would make it a difficult contract to move.

The Patriots drafted Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft. He played excellently in his one appearance last year, which came in relief of fellow rookie Drake Maye in the team’s regular-season finale against the Bills. Milton completed 22 of his 29 attempts (75.9% completion rate) for 241 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed 10 times for 16 yards and a touchdown.

Grier was a third-round selection by the Panthers in 2019. Since then, he’s bounced around between five different teams. His current stint in Dallas is his second with the Cowboys after serving as a third-string and practice squad quarterback in 2022 and 2023. Grier returned to the Cowboys last November when the team signed him to the practice squad. Two months later, Dallas signed him to the active roster.
