The Washington Commanders are going for broke. And general manager Adam Peters is stopping at nothing to ensure the team maintains its exceptional start under his leadership.
Another bombshell trade confirmed that in no uncertain terms.
According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, the Commanders have agreed to trade for standout offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil for a package of draft picks. Washington is sending this year’s third-round pick, coupled with second and fourth-rounders next year in exchange for the left tackle and a fourth-round pick from the Houston Texans. This is another all-in move that represents a significant statement of intent.
Commanders get massive offensive line upgrade with Laremy Tunsil
Tunsil is one of the league’s premier edge protectors. The Commanders felt upgrading the offensive line was worth the risk, something that will probably see Brandon Coleman move onto the interior despite acquitting himself well as a rookie.
There’s no doubt that Tunsil represents an immediate upgrade. And there should be nobody happier about the deal than quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels.
Daniels is a superstar. He took the league by storm in 2024 en route to NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Commanders have done him a massive favor by acquiring an elite force to man his blindside.
The compensation is steep, but if Tunsil provides Daniels with some extra time in the pocket to go through his progressions, it’ll be worth it. Looking at the veteran’s production last season and throughout his career, there’s a good chance this scenario will come to fruition.
Washington isn’t messing around. They know how pivotal maximizing this window is. Daniels’ rapid emergence gave Peters the freedom to be bolder. And this is just the start.
What this means for Coleman’s future is anyone’s guess. One would expect him to move onto the interior, perhaps at the right guard position until Sam Cosmi is ready to return. This is where he’s best suited after some growing pains from a technical standpoint on the edge.
This is another bombshell of epic proportions. The Commanders are swinging for the fences and doing everything in their power to fix the trenches. They were second-best to the Philadelphia Eagles in these two areas last season. Adding Tunsil gets them a lot closer.
And there’s just no telling what more Peters has up his sleeve. But it won’t be too much longer before fans find out for sure.
