Home favourite Coco Gauff has returned to the Miami Open Round of 16 – the stage where she was toppled last year. She is set to face Polish star Magda Linette for a spot in the quarterfinals. Linette has looked in fine form so far in the tournament, beating 18th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova as well as 19-year-old talent Linda Fruhvirtova along the way.
Gauff has recorded 13 wins in 17 matches so far this season; her tennis in Miami has been some of the best she has played in the past couple of months. After dismantling former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in a double bagel, she overcame the Maria Sakkari challenge with relative ease. The 21-year-old who celebrated her birthday around ten days ago will be adamant on getting her hands on the coveted trophy this week.

On the other hand, Linette has played more matches this season owing to her lower ranking – making a quarterfinal run in Abu Dhabi along the way. Despite being the less fancied of the two, Magda is more than capable of causing an upset on her given day.
Coco Gauff has a 2-0 advantage in the head-to-head statistics against Magda Linette. She has dropped a solitary set in these two encounters.
The first match between these two competitors was way back in 2021, when the American dream edged the now Polish No. 3 in three gruesome sets. After dropping the first set, Gauff made a stunning comeback to avoid a Round-1 embarrassment on home soil in New York.

Seeking revenge in Wuhan last year, Linette was unfortunately no match for her higher ranked opponent. Coco bagged a bagel in the opening set, before claiming the second set and closing out the match without any hiccups. The final score read 6-0 6-4 to the prodigious talent.
