Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes opens up about Travis Kelce’s future: ‘He still has a love for the game’

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes will try to win their fourth Super Bowl championship together on Sunday.

The Hall of Famer caliber career of Travis Kelce has helped propel the Kansas City Chiefs to their successful run over the past few seasons. The loss in Super Bowl LIX could be Kelce’s last game if recent rumors are true that the star tight end could be considering retirement.

During his postgame press conference, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts on Kelce’s future.

“I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own, man. He’s given so much to this team and the NFL and has been such a joy for me to work with and for people to watch,” said Mahomes. “He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it. He always makes plays in the biggest moments.”

Kelce finished the game with four catches for 39 yards, which wasn’t a significant factor, while Mahomes dodged pass rushers most of the night.

“But it’s if he wants to put in that grind, to go out there and play 20 games to get to the Super Bowl,” said Kelce. “He’s done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I know he still has a love for the game. He’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own.”

Kelce was still a Pro Bowler in 2024, finishing the campaign with 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns. The decision will squarely be up to him during the offseason, as the veteran tight end is a cornerstone member of the franchise.
