Celtics take care of Kings, but Jayson Tatum suffers ankle injury

SACRAMENTO — The Celtics have made it clear that they will prioritize health, rest, and rhythm over the final few weeks of the regular season.

Aside from some minor bumps and bruises, they had mostly accomplished this goal entering Monday’s game against the Kings. But the team received a scare when star forward Jayson Tatum sprained his left ankle after landing on Sacramento center Domantas Sabonis’s foot on a 4-point play with 3 minutes, 35 seconds left in the third quarter.

Tatum crashed to the ground and appeared to be writhing in pain before eventually limping to the bench with assistance. He briefly stayed in the game to take the flagrant foul free-throw before walking to the locker room under his own power with a limp that was far less noticeable than the one he displayed minutes earlier.

Tatum’s 4-point play gave the Celtics an 11-point lead, and his teammates were able to finish off this 113-95 win without him. It was Boston’s sixth win in a row and 11th in 12 games.

Tatum finished with 25 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds. Even if he is fine, it is likely that the Celtics will err on the side of caution in the coming days, particularly since they are all but locked into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Payton Pritchard added 22 points off the bench for the Celtics. Jaylen Brown returned after missing three games with a bone bruise on his knee and had 9 points in 26 minutes.

Zach LaVine scored eight straight Kings points soon after Tatum’s injury to slice a 15-point deficit to 97-87 with 8:17 left. But 3-pointers by Baylor Scheierman, who had a strong game off the bench, and Pritchard ensured that there would be no big comeback by Sacramento.

Scheierman finished with 9 points on three made 3-pointers, and added 7 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Kristaps Porzingis added 16 points in 31 minutes, to go with 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
