Cavs star to miss road trip finale vs. Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Cavs will wrap up their five-game road trip Tuesday night without one of their most important players.

Star guard Donovan Mitchell has been ruled out against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Mitchell, the team’s leading scorer and possible MVP candidate, won’t play due to injury management related to his left groin — an issue that first popped up about two weeks ago and led to him missing back-to-games against Brooklyn and Memphis.

Mitchell returned without issue on March 16 and hasn’t missed a game since despite sporadic production.

When asked recently whether his groin was playing a role in his substandard month, Mitchell quickly dismissed that notion.

“I’m fine,” Mitchell said. “I’m fine. I’m fine.”

Mitchell helped Cleveland snap its season-long four-game losing skid in Utah Sunday afternoon. He tallied 16 points, four assists and three rebounds in 21 minutes during the team’s 120-91 triumph.

Tuesday will be Mitchell’s seventh absence this season.

In 65 games, the number required to be eligible for end-of-season awards, Mitchell is averaging 23.7 points on 44% from the field and 36.7% from 3-point range to go with 4.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds.
