Sam Smith secured a point for Wrexham in a 2-2 draw against Cambridge United on Tuesday, as the League One promotion hopefuls missed out on a chance to extend their buffer over Wycombe Wanderers.
George Dobson put the visitors — aiming for a third straight English league promotion — in front after just four minutes, before goals from Liam Bennett and Josh Stokes either side of halftime put Cambridge ahead.
But Smith, a January signing from Reading, scored his third goal for Wrexham in the 57th minute to grab a point for Phil Parkinson’s side.
With Wycombe drawing 0-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town, Wrexham remain second and three points ahead of the Buckinghamshire side. Only the top two in League One gain automatic promotion to the Championship.
Wrexham, who have played a game more than Wycombe, face relegation-threatened Burton Albion next.
There are only six games remaining in League One for the side owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
