It may only be the second round of the season, but 2025 is already throwing up more than its fair share of fascinating figures – very welcome ones if you happen to be McLaren or Mercedes. And there were some pleasant surprises in Shanghai for others too…
• McLaren today scored the 50th 1-2 finish in their constructor history (the first was at the 1968 Canadian Grand Prix where Denny Hulme beat Bruce McLaren).
REPORT: Piastri beats Norris and Russell to victory in Chinese Grand Prix with statement performance
• McLaren have won three consecutive Grands Prix for first time since the 2012 Hungarian, Belgian and Italian rounds.
• Oscar Piastri’s win was his third career Grand Prix victory.
• Piastri scored points for a 28th consecutive race weekend (the longest active streak in F1).
• Team mate Lando Norris finished second in Shanghai for the second consecutive season.
• Norris now leads the Drivers’ Championship by eight points over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

• With P3, George Russell scored Mercedes’ 300th podium finish as an F1 constructor.
• Russell scored podium finishes in consecutive races for the first time since the Netherlands/Italy 2022.
• Verstappen’s late pass on the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to clinch P4 meant he preserved second in the Drivers’ Championship over Russell.
• P5 for Esteban Ocon was Haas’ best-ever result in Shanghai.
• Ocon was the slowest qualifier at the opening race weekend.
• Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli took P6 and has scored in both his Grand Prix starts so far.
A great drive saw Oliver Bearman score for the first time in 2025
• Williams’ Alex Albon led the race on his birthday, becoming the ninth driver to do so in F1 history. He finished in P7.
• They were Williams’ first official laps in the lead of a Grand Prix for nearly 10 years, the last being for Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas at Silverstone 2015.
• Oliver Bearman took P8, meaning Haas scored points with both cars after they finished last in the Australian Grand Prix.
• Two teenagers (Antonelli and Bearman) scored in the same Grand Prix for only the second time ever, after Monza 2017 with Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll.
DRIVER OF THE DAY: Antonelli gets your nod after scoring despite damage in China
• At Kick Sauber, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto in P14 beat team mate Nico Hulkenberg by 9.4 seconds.
• Fernando Alonso retired with suspected brake issues on his Aston Martin and is the only driver without a finish in the 2025 season.
