Bellingham sent off in bust-up with LaLiga referee to leave teammates shocked

Jude Bellingham was shown a straight red card for dissent after clashing with a LaLiga referee on Saturday.

The England superstar was seen mouthing words at the official in a heated conversation during Real Madrid‘s 1-1 draw with Osasuna.

Clearly pushing things too far, the referee chose hand Bellingham a straight-red and give him his marching orders.

It is unclear what the 21-year-old said to warrant the dismissal – but it left him and his Madrid teammates in complete disbelief – given dissent is usually considered a yellow card offence.

Travelling Madrid fans had been chanting ‘corruption in the federation’ during a first-half which saw a number of appeals waved away by the referee.

Madrid coach Carlo Aneclotti had already received a yellow card for complaining about what he thought was a handball by an Osasuna defender in the host’s area.

Speaking after the game, Ancelotti said: “I think the referee did not understand Bellingham’s English.

“He said ‘f*** off’ and not ‘f*** you’. The translation in Spanish is different.

“I think the referee was nervous. Bellingham said ‘if that’s a foul then that was a penalty, f*** off’, Bellingham didn’t do anything to deserve a red card. The referee didn’t understand English.”

Bellingham himself had two penalty shouts turned down, although Real Madrid were still 1-0 up at the time of Bellingham’s red card thanks to Kylian Mbappe‘s early effort.

Things got worse not long after the break when Ante Budimir scored a penalty to draw the game level.

While Los Blancos pushed forward for a winner, they had to settle for a point, meaning that they drop crucial points in the three-way battle for the La Liga title.

Dani Carvajal took to social media after the red card with a cryptic post that said: “hoy ha tocado expulsion,” which translates to: “Today it was expulsion,” with a thinking face and two crying with laughter emojis.

It’s the second time that Bellingham has been sent off in the white of Real Madrid.

The first time was in March last year when he was red-carded against Valencia, however this is his first sending off of this season.

Bellingham had been hoping to make a positive impression following his match-winning display against Manchester City midweek.

The midfielder’s late strike earned a 3-2 win over Man City to take an advantage back to the Bernabeu in the second leg of their Champions League play-off round.

Despite his red card here, Bellingham will be available for the clash with Pep Guardiola’s side on Wednesday night after avoiding a booking at the Etihad Stadium.
