It looks like there’s talk in Belgrade of building a Novak Djokovic museum.

Serbian media asked the 10-time Australian Open champion about it after his fourth-round match against Jiri Lehecka last night.

The world No.7 confirmed talks about the topic were in the beginning stage, Nova, Kurir and Sport klub are reporting.

Djokovic said the museum idea was his family project, particularly his father’s.

“We want to have absolute control over the concept, positioning and management. Will that happen in Belgrade? I hope so. Will that be in the far or near future? That depends on talks with authorities,” Djokovic said, according to reports in Serbian media.

He said he had been saying for years that it was unbelievable Serbia did not have a sports or an Olympics museum, or a champions’ museum to showcase all the “trophies and medals which we’ve won in all these past decades”.

Serbia first deserved a sports museum, Djokovic said, but he would also like to have his own.

“As far as my museum is concerned, of course, I would like to have it, if the Serbian state and the Serbian people think that’s relevant in the context of a tourist attraction, something that could attract the world’s attention,” Djokovic said.

“I would like that to happen, and for there to be collaboration with the state, as I believe that it, in a way, should be state property. As much as I am an individual in sport, I have always tried – and still do – to represent Serbia.”
