Gap Ministries holds annual MLK canned food drive

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – On Monday, Gap Ministries spent the day doing their annual Martin Luther King Jr. canned food drive.

The non-profit asked for easy-open and unexpired canned goods, spices, pasta and ramen.

And it’s not just canned food they accepted, but other crucial items like feminine hygiene products and toilet paper.

This also gave Gap Ministries a way to stock back up after Helene in the fall.

“This ear after Hurricane Helene they saw an uptick,” said Sharonda Williams, AmeriCorps VISTA leader at the United Way of the CSRA. “They served over 355 families and were hoping to serve more this year.”

If you missed the chance to donate on Monday, don’t worry.

Gap Ministries is always taking donations whether that be canned food, things like diapers and feminine hygiene products, or money.

And honoring Dr. King in the CSRA doesn’t end there.

This weekend the office of Mayor Garnett Johnson will volunteer at the third annual MLK Jr. service day.

Golden Harvest Food Bank, Project Refresh and local barbers will provide showers, clothes, haircuts, hot meals and hygiene kits to those in need.

This event will be at the Master’s Table Saturday at 10 a.m.
