The end of the holiday season and the start of a new year can be tough, but at least it’s also the start of Girl Scout Cookie season. That said, this season’s kick-off comes with some bad news for certain cookie enthusiasts: two popular flavors, S’mores and Toast-Yay, will be discontinued after this year.

“We routinely reevaluate our cookie lineup to make room for new innovations,” a Girl Scouts of the USA spokesperson told Food & Wine. “Discontinuing Toast-Yay! and Girl Scout S’mores may lead to something new and delicious.”

Girl Scouts launched the S’mores, a graham sandwich cookie with chocolate and marshmallow filling, in 2017. The Toast-Yay, a toast-shaped, French toast-flavored cookie dipped in icing, joined the line-up in 2021.

While local Toast-Yay enthusiasts will be able to get their final fix this season, S’mores lovers in Northern California are already out of luck. The S’mores cookie is not listed as an available flavor this season on the Girl Scouts of Northern California website, despite being available last year. Girl Scouts of Northern California marketing representative Rebekah Kapfer confirmed to SFGATE that S’mores are not part of the region’s lineup this year.

“It’s important to note that each Girl Scout council operates independently and may work with different bakers—either ABC Bakers or Little Brownie Bakers,” Kapfer said in an emailed statement. “This means that cookie offerings, pricing, and sales schedules can vary by council. Every purchase directly benefits local Girl Scouts and their community projects.”

Northern California Girl Scouts have also switched to a new baker this year — ABC Bakers — meaning the introduction of a few new cookies to the market. Cookies prices will increase to $7 a box this year “to address the rising costs of cookies, distribution, credit card fees, and related expenses,” Kapfer added.

All the other usual cookie suspects will still be in rotation: Thin Mints, Caramel deLites (also known as Samoas), Peanut Butter Patties (also known as Tagalongs) and more. While nationally, Girl Scout Cookie season began on Jan. 7, in Northern California, the season doesn’t begin until Jan. 13 for digital sales and Feb. 6 for in-person sales. Those seeking cookies can visit a nearby cookie booth or reach out to a Girl Scout they know for a link to order cookies online.
