Mariners Game #34 Preview: 5/5/25, SEA at ATH

After taking a series from Texas this weekend, the Mariners continue on with the AL West with a series against the A’s. It’s their second time seeing the A’s but the first on the road, as the Mariners will play their first game of the season at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, a novelty that I’m sure will have worn off by the end of this series. The game notes inform me this isn’t the first time the Mariners have played in Sacramento, as the Rangers beat the Mariners 6-5 in an exhibition game held on March 29 in 2003 after the conclusion of spring training, back when the season used to actually start in April. At the time, Sutter Health Park was called Raley Stadium, which makes me sad. Get well soon, Luke, and we’ll keep that joke warm for July.

Checking in on Sutter Home Health Park:

Haha, neat!

Lineups:

In a series that will probably come down to who can outslug who, the Mariners will be missing one of their big boppers today, as Randy Arozarena is out of the lineup after tweaking his hamstring in yesterday’s game. Per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, Randy expects to be back tomorrow.

News:

Logan Gilbert has reportedly begun a throwing program and is out to 120 feet, feeling good but taking things slow. Today is a full off-day after he threw three days in a row.

In other news, Dominic Canzone has earned PCL Player of the Week after bashing four homers in the past week. Looks like someone senses a roster spot is open. Can you zone what Dominic is cooking. That’s not funny but I had to get it out of my brain, you understand.

Today in Mariners History:

  • 2001 – Dan Wilson hits his first homer of the season, his first career pinch-hit home run to lead off the seventh inning against Toronto. Your move, Cal.
  • 2012 – Kyle Seager went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and Félix Hernández allowed 1 hit over 8.0 shutout innings as the Mariners defeated the Twins 7-0. Steve Delabar added a perfect 9th inning for the third combined one-hitter in club history. Steve Delabarheads, today is your day.
  • 2018 – Robinson Canó recorded his 1,200th and 1,201st RBI, becoming the third second baseman in MLB history to record at least 1,100 runs, 2,000 hits, 500 doubles, 300 home runs and 1,200 RBI, joining Rogers Hornsby and Jeff Kent. Your move, Jorge.
