Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz taken to hospital for evaluation after hit to head: Sources

TORONTO — Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz was taken to hospital for further evaluation after leaving Monday’s game against the Florida Panthers with an apparent head injury, according to league sources.

Stolarz took a forearm to the head from Panthers forward Sam Bennett at 7:20 of the second period and was knocked to the ice.

Officials stopped the play immediately, but Stolarz initially remained in the net. He played another two-plus minutes of the game — spanning nine minutes in actual time — before skating to the Leafs bench and throwing up.

Joseph Woll replaced him and finished up a 5-4 Toronto victory in Game 1 of the second-round series.

After the game, Leafs coach Craig Berube told reporters that he didn’t know how the officials on the ice missed calling a penalty on the play.

“Elbow to the head,” Berube said. “Clearly. Clear as day.”

The Panthers did not make Bennett available to reporters despite him being requested to speak.

The NHL’s department of player safety was still gathering information on the incident late Monday and it’s not clear if Bennett will face supplementary discipline.
